Driven by the pandemic, a younger workforce, and technological innovation, more businesses are adopting this flexible working model.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is a hybrid working model? What does hybrid work mean? What are some examples to refer to?<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, I\u2019ll walk you through the answers to these questions and more. And we know what we\u2019re talking about: we\u2019ve been offering a hybrid schedule from before COVID and are fully hybrid now. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\r\n<h2><b>What is hybrid work?<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid, or <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flexos.work\/learn\/what-does-hybrid-remote-mean-how-should-companies-get-started\"><b>hybrid remote<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, work offers the flexibility to work from home <strong>and<\/strong> the office. Employees can work remotely on some days and be physically present in the office on others.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can skip the dreaded long motorbike commutes for one or more days per week and do their work from home. On other days, they\u2019ll join their colleagues in the office to collaborate in person. This setup balances the benefits of remote work, such as flexibility, with the advantages of in-person collaboration.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other markets like Singapore and the USA, hybrid work is the most popular working method. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 Stanford research shows that US-based employees now <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/zuktuv1j4hehrsr\/Exec_March2023.pdf?dl=0\"><b><span style=\"color: #db4140; text-decoration: underline;\">work from home 1 in 4 days<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For employees, more flexibility means better balancing work and life, less commuting times, and more time to work productively.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why the University of Leeds found that Hybrid work increases <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/futureworkplace.leeds.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2022\/05\/UoL_Adapting_Offices_Interactive_Report-Where_is_Your_Office_Today_May_2022.pdf\"><b>job satisfaction, engagement, and commitment<\/b><\/a><\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the US, employees value working from home even as much as an 8% pay increase, recent Stanford research showed.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here in Vietnam, Dreamplex research supports the same: <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/dreamplex.co\/blog\/gen-z-in-the-workplace\/\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5<\/span>6%<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <a include:<\/span>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased productivity: Hybrid work allows for focused, uninterrupted work time, enhancing productivity.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved work-life balance: Employees have the flexibility to manage personal and professional responsibilities more effectively.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhanced job satisfaction: The autonomy and flexibility of hybrid work contribute to higher job satisfaction levels.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expanded talent pool: Hybrid work opens opportunities to hire talent from diverse locations.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced by adopting a hybrid work model.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these benefits are the reasons many companies are now exploring hybrid work.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\r\n<h2><b>Downsides of hybrid work<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are many benefits, we must acknowledge that there are downsides, too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common challenges on work-from-home days include:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of access to information.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased career and development opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling isolated.<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling guilty or experiencing <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/leading-success\/202201\/when-doing-is-your-undoing-toxic-productivity\"><b>toxic productivity<\/b><\/a><\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of remote support from managers to employees, including challenges around hybrid collaboration, communication, and engagement.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are challenges experienced in mature markets where people have worked remotely for many years. In Vietnam, remote work is so new that our work culture isn\u2019t always ready for it.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our research amongst Vietnamese <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/dreamplex.co\/blog\/gen-z-in-the-workplace\/\"><b>Gen Z<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that distractions at home, a lack of discipline, and difficulty communicating are reasons why they still prefer office days over fully remote work.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;8453&#8243; img_size=&#8221;1920&#215;1080&#8243; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]We can overcome these challenges, and many companies are making strides towards this. Hybrid work can work as well as in-office work, but it requires intentional design of strategies and practices.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\r\n<h2><b>Defeating the stereotype: hybrid work doesn\u2019t make us less productive \u2013 if managed well.<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You and everyone have their own time and place when they\u2019re most productive. The psychologist Mih\u00e0ly Cs\u00eckszentmih\u00e0lyi has a name for the moment you\u2019re most productive: \u201cflow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he explains in his book <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Flow-Psychology-Experience-Perennial-Classics\/dp\/0061339202\"><b>Flow<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is when you fully use your core capabilities to meet a goal or challenge. He found that individuals who often experienced flow were more productive. And they derived greater satisfaction from their work than those who didn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst the ways to achieve \u2018flow\u2019 is to understand the time and place you are most productive. This may be different depending on the task.\u00a0 For example, you may do your emails best in the morning before work at home. While you are most creative or strategic between 10 and 12 in the office. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos famously <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/amazon-jeff-bezos-schedule-meetings-2018-9\"><b>doesn\u2019t schedule any meetings<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that demand his deep focus after 12 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid work helps people achieve peak productivity. This is a win-win for both companies and employees.\u00a0 Of course, there are downsides to working so flexibly, too. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many employees, having this amount of freedom is a new concept. They are not used to having to motivate themselves. A lack of motivation and discipline is one of the main issues for Vietnamese Gen Z working from home.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with everything, hybrid working is something everyone will have to learn. From the leadership to managers to individual employees.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-2 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;side-menu sticky-top&#8221;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-2 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;side-menu sticky-top&#8221;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-8 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\r\n<h2><b>Creating an office that supports hybrid work<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hybrid work also changes the requirements for an office. After all, if work can happen at home, why would people still come to the office?\u00a0 According to <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/10\/does-your-hybrid-strategy-need-to-change\"><b>2023 research from the renowned consultancy BCG<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people want to be in the office to meet other people:<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor instance, participants were eight times more likely to prefer being in-person for affiliation and development, compared with doing work that requires focus or tackling administrative tasks, which are better done remotely.\u201d\u00a0 In Vietnam, <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/dreamplex.co\/blog\/what-is-gen-z\/\"><b>Dreamplex\u2019s Gen Z research showed that over 60% of employees<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want to come to the office for collaboration and connection. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;8451&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]\r\n<h2><b>Should we redesign the office for hybrid work?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is yes. Companies adopting hybrid work should create <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/dreamplex.co\/4-types-of-spaces-post-covid-that-offices-need\/\"><b>spaces accommodating social, meeting, and focused work activities<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These types of spaces can exist anywhere in the office. It does not matter whether they\u2019re distributed or grouped together. The importance of offering all these spaces is critical.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that offering a variety of spaces <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/10\/balancing-we-and-me-the-best-collaborative-spaces-also-support-solitude\"><b>drives more employee engagement<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It provides them with more opportunities to do their best work every day. At the same time, it also increases the sense that their company cares enough to deliver this to them.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the key types of spaces a hybrid office needs:<\/span>\r\n<h3><b>Social<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More remote work also means that there is more isolation and loneliness. Feeling isolated while working from home is the biggest concern people identified. As we saw above, the top reason to return to the office is to connect with co-workers.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a survey we ran during the COVID lockdown, 1 in 2 Dreamplex members say that it\u2019s contact with coworkers they missed the most from the physical office. 63% said they missed other members of the community.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/research\/articles\/topics\/culture-talent\/work-better\/\"><b>Steelcase research<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having a strong sense of community is essential for boosting productivity and positively influencing engagement, innovation, and commitment to an organization.\u00a0 Google has even <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2020\/09\/28\/google-ceo-sundar-pichai-calls-for-a-hybrid-work-from-home-model\/?sh=73fb9be5e9cf\"><b>recognized community<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a top reason to continue investing in physical offices.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People tend to find each other in various spaces, where they have casual encounters, such as community areas, lounges, pantries, coffee shops, outdoor spaces, and entertainment areas. Together, these spaces can facilitate more impromptu and casual interactions among employees.<\/span>\r\n<h3><b>Meet<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID pandemic has shown us that online collaboration is possible. However, many find it still more effective in person at the office.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because trust is a vital factor for successful collaboration, and it is easier to <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><a style=\"color: #db4140;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/the-new-future-of-work\/\"><b>build trust face-to-face<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therefore, optimal collaboration occurs when we can approach someone physically and have access to the necessary tools and resources.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially true for Gen Z and Millennials in Vietnam, according to <\/span><span style=\"color: #db4140;\"><b>Dreamplex\u2019s Gen Z research<\/b><\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They say that they prefer to work in groups, in person.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-2 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;side-menu sticky-top&#8221;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-2 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;side-menu sticky-top&#8221;][\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;5\/6&#8243; offset=&#8221;vc_col-md-offset-0 vc_col-md-8 vc_col-sm-offset-1&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]\r\n<h3><b>Focus<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to prioritize focused work in a hybrid office.
